  4.               (Applies to ReachOut versions 3.X, 4.X, and 5.X)

  8.       BACKGROUND
  9.       
  10.       Utilizing ReachOut's modem version along with ReachOut's network
  11.       version will allow for a gateway setup.  This gateway setup can
  12.       be used two ways: to allow access from a modem viewer to a modem
  13.       host and then to any workstation out on a network, or to allow
  14.       any workstation to dialout via a dedicated workstation with a
  15.       modem in it. In these two cases the machine in the middle is
  16.       acting as a bridge. The bridge machine must have ReachOut Network
  17.       and Modem software installed in the same directory, and they must
  18.       be the same version number. This configuration is the default
  19.       with ReachOut version 5, but with earlier versions requires the
  20.       purchase of separate products. The bridge computer, when
  21.       operating as a bridge must remain in DOS. This allows it to link
  22.       the data between the network card and the modem with maximum
  23.       throughput. The Viewer may run DOS or Windows, the Host may run
  24.       DOS or Windows, but the Bridge must remain in DOS.

  26.       TERMINOLOGY
  27.       
  28.       In this document:
  29.           - The Viewer is the computer that makes the first connection.
  30.           - The Bridge is the computer linking the Host and Viewer.
  31.           - The Host is the computer at the final destination.
  32.           - Modem indicates ReachOut's modem product. Note that with
  33.             ReachOut version 5, Modem and Network are incorporated into the
  34.             same product.
  35.           - Network indicates ReachOut's network product.

  37.       SETUP
  38.       
  39.       Upgrading to ReachOut version 5 is strongly recommended. All the
  40.       necessary functionality is included in one product, installation
  41.       is simpler, there is no issue with different versions, and the
  42.       connections are faster and more robust.

  44.       For a dialin gateway solution
  45.       
  46.        1.  Install ReachOut version 5 on the Viewer and configure for
  47.            modem connections. For earlier versions, install the Modem
  48.            Viewer.
  49.        2.  Install ReachOut version 5 on the Bridge. Configure it for a
  50.            modem Host and a network viewer using the CONFIG utility.
  51.            For earlier versions, install the Modem Host for DOS and a
  52.            Network Viewer for DOS.*
  53.        3.  Install ReachOut version 5 on the Host and configure for
  54.            Network connections. For earlier versions install the
  55.            Network viewer.

  57.       For a dialout gateway solution
  58.       
  59.        1.  Install ReachOut version 5 on the Viewer and configure for
  60.            network connections. For earlier versions, install the
  61.            Network Viewer.
  62.        2.  Install ReachOut version 5 on the Bridge. Configure it for a
  63.            network Host and a modem viewer using the CONFIG utility.
  64.            For earlier versions, install the Network Host for DOS and a
  65.            Modem Viewer for DOS.*
  66.        3.  Install ReachOut version 5 on the Host and configure for
  67.            Modem connections. For earlier versions install the Modem
  68.            viewer.
  69.       * On the Bridge system run INSTALLD.EXE, if you do not need to
  70.       access Windows on the Bridge machine when it is not acting as a
  71.       bridge. If you install ReachOut under Windows, exit Windows,
  72.       change to the REACHOUT directory and run CONFIG. Setup the modem
  73.       communications information. Then run CONFIG again and setup the
  74.       network communications information.

  76.       OPERATION
  77.       
  78.       For a dialin gateway solution
  79.       
  80.        1.  Start ReachOut Host on the Host computer/workstation.
  81.        2.  Run GHM.BAT on the computer acting as the Bridge machine.
  82.        3.  Start the ReachOut Viewer on the Viewer computer and connect
  83.            to the bridge machine.
  84.        4.  Once connected to the Bridge computer run GVN.BAT and
  85.            connect to the Host network workstation.
  86.        5.  When disconnecting from the Host, you will first be
  87.            disconnected from the Network Host, then you will need to
  88.            disconnect from the Bridge.

  90.       For dialout gateway solution
  91.       
  92.        1.  Start ReachOut Host on the Host computer/workstation.
  93.        2.  Run GHN.BAT on the computer acting as the Bridge machine.
  94.        3.  Start the ReachOut Viewer on the Viewer computer and connect
  95.            to the bridge machine.
  96.        4.  Once connected to the Bridge computer run GVM.BAT and
  97.            connect to the computer running the modem Host.
  98.        5.  When disconnecting from the Host, you will first be
  99.            disconnected from the Modem Host, then you will need to
  100.            disconnect from the Bridge.
